The game of Basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr James Naismith at YMCA Massachusetts. Today, Basketball is currently the fastest growing participation sport in New Zealand - and that's no wonder, there are so many benefits from playing.
Basketball at The Y (formerly YMCA) is a great way to teach children social skills, as well as focusing on strengthening their fine motor skills which will support them when playing various other sports as they grow. We focus on teaching and developing specific techniques and skills, so your child will be dribbling, passing and shooting in no time.
Our knowledgeable and skilled coaches will help your child master the game with confidence and they'll improve their fitness along the way.

Our Basketball Academy teaches ball-handling skills, drills, shooting and aiming, as well as an understanding of the rules of basketball in a non-competitive, fun environment. We aim to create confidence, teamwork and overall fitness of all players. Each week focuses on a different element of the game, working in small groups through modified games. Players work towards Inter-Y tournaments each year.
The Y Junior Basketball Leagues introduce young players to competitive games in a safe and friendly environment. They'll learn the values of teamwork and will build on their skills each week.
