A swim school group from Lagoon Pool and Leisure Centre managed by YMCA has taken out the Swim School Showdown title for the third consecutive year, beating students from Onehunga, Glen Innes and Mt Roskill.
The group of 29 students took out the title following an afternoon of competition last weekend at Onehunga War Memorial Pools. Over 150 competitors aged between 5 and 15 battled for individual awards and the overall Swim School Showdown Cup across a series of events including freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and relays.
The annual competition enables YMCA swim school students from across Auckland the opportunity to compete against each other under the guidance of swim school coaches.
YMCA Swim School Quality Services Manager Karla McCaughan said many of the young participants are eager to test their skills in a competitive environment.
“The event is designed to be an afternoon of fun but also to introduce participants to a competitive swim environment.”
Panmure students have dominated the competition in recent years and some students have gone on to compete in regional events.
