Now in our 3rd year, The Y Sports Camps have been packed with friendly competition and tons of opportunities to make new friends and pick up new skills. Our mission has always been to give every young person the same shot at finding a sport they love and living an active, healthy life.
Thanks to our awesome sponsor, Grassroots Trust, we welcomed schools from all over South and West Auckland, plus a combined group of small rural schools from the Hauraki District.
This year, we shook things up with the introduction of flag football! This fast-paced sport is a super fun, no-contact version of American gridiron where players pull flags from the ball carrier’s belt to stop play. It’s safer and more inclusive, perfect for all ages and skill levels.
A special highlight again this year was Ki O Rahi. This traditional Māori ball sport is a thrilling mix of rugby union, netball, tag rugby, and touch. It’s not only fast-paced but also demands top-notch agility, sharp ball-handling skills, and some serious strategic thinking. Playing Ki O Rahi was a fantastic way to promote teamwork, cultural appreciation, and physical fitness among all our athletes. Including this game in our camp activities shows our commitment to offering diverse and culturally enriching experiences alongside physical wellbeing.
And the fun didn’t stop there! Each evening, our young athletes swapped their sports gear and took to the stage with a range of cultural performances. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to showcase their school’s culture, with everything from traditional Cook Island dance to kapa haka and pop culture.
We can’t wait to see what next year brings to grow our mission in providing opportunities for youth to develop their individual well being.
