The Y (formerly known as YMCA) is dedicated to enriching the lives of everyone that comes into contact with the organisation, no matter who they are. It is this philosophy of acceptance that is behind the The Y Swim School’s Access and Inclusion Programme, which aims to provide an equal opportunity for a diverse range of people to participate in aquatic activities, regardless of their ability, age, culture or background.
Not wanting to exclude any members of the community from learning and enjoying swimming, through being involved in a Swim School, we have developed the programme with the goal of removing barriers to participation that could keep these Aucklanders out of the water. Instead, they want to enable all people, including those with a disability, to access a swimming programme that gives them the opportunity to be in an inclusive environment that recognises and celebrates their individual abilities.
Each of the programmes cater to people on a case-by-case basis. Water safety is a key element across the board and there is a focus on helping people learn to swim when possible. The programmes also work to improve muscular and strength endurance; develop motor skills and balance; improve self-confidence; and increase fitness, health and wellbeing.
Along with learning valuable swimming and water safety skills, the programme is also about developing skills like hand-eye coordination, balance and movement. Many participants have also gone from supported classes and private lessons to regular Swim School sessions with peers in their age group.
To ensure you receive the highest teaching quality our swim teachers receive on-going training, are AUSTSWIM qualified and are police checked. We have a variety of different teachers to suit your needs.
The Y Swim Schools have been recognised recipients for a number of AUSTSWIM Aotearoa awards in 2015 and 2016. Awards include; Swim Centre of the Year, Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety, Teacher of Infant and Preschool and Presenter of the Year.
No matter what the weather, we have indoor heated pools perfect for swimming all year round. Our purpose built facilities are designed for ease of use with wheelchair access, baby change tables and family changing rooms situated readily on poolside.
Maximising potential and seeing swimmers progress is important to us. We aim to keep our instructor to student ratios as low as possible to ensure the best learning results. Students that require one to one attention have option to have a support teacher or private lessons based on your swim schools recommendation.
Before you begin lessons with us we offer a free assessment to ensure your child is in the right level for their development. Throughout the programme children are continually assessed and will be moved up once they have achieved the level goals requirements.
At The Y we believe that cost should never be a barrier for individuals and families accessing services in their community. The Y provides fee assistance on an application basis to ensure that services are available to everyone.
No matter what the participants require, the staff at The Y will find a programme to suit them and help them achieve their goals in the water.
